Day Before Labor Day BBQ

We had 27 people over this evening to celebrate Labor Day.

It rained most of the day and I spent the day getting ready, but by the time everyone came over the rain had stopped.  It was still wet, but it was warm out and we had a good time anyway.

The food didn’t all turn out exactly as I’d planned.  These are hot dogs that I got at one of the stores on the high street.  They are kosher, which is wonderful, but I didn’t exactly follow the directions for boiling them so the casings burst and they curled up like snails.  (In my defense, the grilled ones don’t look so hot either.)  Fortunately one of the girls brought “real” hot dogs from the base and everyone ate those instead.  We did have a good laugh over these, though.

The same person who brought the hot dogs also brought a grill and the makings for s’mores.  Seriously…it wouldn’t have been a party without Kat and Mike.

The kids spent most of the time running in and out of the back door and tracking grass in everywhere, which is fine because my cleaning person comes on Tuesday, but Ava and Boy Avery stuck to the quiet toy area.

It was great because everyone brought something to share and I didn’t have to cook like a maniac - or clean up because everyone took their stuff home.

  • Kat, Mike, Steven, Sarah, and Jamie brought the grill, s’mores stuff, and hot dogs.
  • Cheryl, Dave, Ava, and Hannah brought a potato salad and dessert.
  • Noah and Avery brought chips and wine.  (Jenn stayed home sick with Jack.)
  • Grace, Mike and Avery brought dessert.
  • Kelly, Brad, Marley, Truman, and Grace brought dessert and baked beans
  • Gigi, Rick, Ralston, and Reagan brought appetizers - a cheese plate to die for.
  • I made black bean salad and put together the burgers and dogs, a veg plate, and fruit, and completely forgot to get out the fixings for the burgers, so we ate them sans cheese, onion, pickle, and lettuce.  I am so smart sometimes.

It didn’t matter…naturally everyone was all over dessert!

It was a really fun evening.  Grace and Gigi and their crews stayed later than everyone else…which I LOVED…and I believe that we were up until almost midnight after waiting for Grace’s mini cab to arrive.  That’s the lastest I’ve been up at a party in a LONG time!

I’m so glad that we did this.  I got to meet spouses and it made me realize how many people I know here now Plus in the last month or so I’ve met several who will not be leaving in a year!!!  Maybe this isn’t such a bad place to stick around for three years.

Happy birthday Elena and Murph.

Yesterday I did a whole bunch of work at the house on the third floor and moved gates and toys around, etc., so that the kids can get upstairs and play in their rooms by themselves.

Today we celebrated Elena’s birthday with a trip to the Science Museum.

Naturally, Liam had his favorites.

(Yes, that’s a turd.)

Elena, on the other hand, was all over the place.

She did enjoy the kids section - particularly the stacking and the knocking down of the stacking when I turned the knob and made an earthquake.

Liam spent the majority of the time moving bean bags from one side of the cage to the other.

We left shortly after lunch and had only seen two of the floors…it’s a huge building.  Aaron wanted to stop at Whole Foods, so the kids and I stayed in the car and drove around to thwart the parking guys while he figured out that they didn’t have what he wanted.  All I could think about was how much I wished I could be in the stinky cheese room.
When we got home, A and the kids had apple tart.

Murph got a hug (and a little apple tart).

Poor Murphy.  His life has changed dramatically since he first came to live with us.
We put everyone to bed and then watched Babel.  Good movie.

Happy 7th Anniversary, AJ

Aaron and I have been married for seven years today…and I’ve known him for 10.

In honor of the day, he went to work and I stayed home with the kids - except when I went to buy meat for dinner and Jenn kept the kids.  (That was awesome.)

We sat the kids in front of a movie and ate dinner together:  steak, garlic mashed potatoes, and broccoli.  I didn’t get up the entire meal.

Aaron picked up dessert on the way home it tasted heavenly after not having anything sweet but fruit for the last few days.

It’s been a bit of a crazy year, but I’m glad I spent it with you, babe.

US Trip: Heidi’s Family

I always enjoy spending 4th of July with my family because fireworks are legal…and Aaron is a pyro.  (He once tried to burn down a building in Chicago…ask him about it.)

Anyway, after we had lunch with our pals Colby and Nicole and their kiddos and took Liam to the emergency room for stitches, we drove to visit my fam.

And there, we did these things.

20080701-33.jpg

20080701-42.jpg

Liam begged.  Ethan begged.  Who am I to say no?  We are of Scottish decent…maybe Liam needs a kilt.

20080701-44.jpg

Watching the fireworks with Liam on the fourth left a little to be desired.  We sat inside, upstairs in my parents’ house, and looked out the window. It was too loud outside (and sometimes inside) for the Lammer, but he did enjoy the majority of it.  Fortunately Elena slept through it, so I got to sit with him the whole time.

20080701-45.jpg

My favorite was when we saw a green and red one and Liam exclaimed, “Mama!  It looks like Christmas!!”

After the community fireworks show, the boys did one of their own.

20080701-51.jpg

Their finale involved blowing up a barbie doll.

We did a lot of playing in the water because Kansas is hot in July.

20080701-52.jpg

Sometimes too hot for pants, evidently.

20080701-55.jpg

Peer pressure.

20080701-59.jpg

And, of course, on Saturday we celebrated birthdays…AGAIN - but only after taking Elena to the emergency room.

20080701-61.jpg

20080701-62.jpg

20080701-63.jpg

And then we played outside some more.

20080701-67.jpg

Again, you can see that Liam doesn’t know how to pucker, which makes for crappy bubble blowing in addition to crappy birthday candle blowing out.

20080701-70.jpg

Who doesn’t love a group bath?

20080701-75.jpg

Then the kids had quiet time.

20080701-76.jpg

20080701-77.jpg

Here’s what Liam did with his quiet time.

20080701-81.jpg

20080701-78.jpg

Viola!  A pencil holder!

Sunday we got up and headed out to Heather & Brian’s to check out their new crib.  They have a gorgeous house with a wooded backyard and a huge lot.  I am so happy for them!

Luckily Emalee and Elena played well most of the time.

20080701-82.jpg

And Ethan and Elena played well most of the time.

20080701-83.jpg

(See the squirrel hopping onto the bird feeder?  We saw raccoons too!)

20080701-84.jpg

Unfortunately Liam about drove Ethan bonkers.

20080701-86.jpg

All of the kids were tired and Liam was fighting bed time and nap time while we were there, so he was especially worn out.  I wanted to tranquilize him.  It got so bad that I finally told him if he couldn’t be quiet and rest that we’d have to leave.  I was ready to pack up and go.  Instead he stayed quiet long enough and then Heath saved me and took the kids out swimming so I didn’t have to shoot anyone.  I was a GRUMP.

The Monkeys take Guernville.

Aaron has an amazing group of friends from high school.  After their last reunion, Neal started a group,  for everyone to keep in touch.  He called it Slutmonkey…because it was funny.

At that time, only the actual people who went to high school were in the group.  But that sucked because I wanted to know what was going on.  I lobbied heavily for entry into the elite group.  Eventually all spouses/spouses-to-be were added to the group, and we too became part of the troop.  Then we started having babies, and they became mini monkeys.  And now it’s turned into a couple of barrels of fun.  (Bad, I know.)

Anyway, one of the girls organized a trip to California and managed to plan it around our trip back so that we could attend.

Everything went well after Aaron’s mom caught us on the way to the airport and brought us Stinky Pinky and Milo.  It didn’t really matter since we took off late thanks to the fires, but we did eventually get there to meet Neal and Ang in San Fran, and then drove to our destination thanks to Susie and the US map that Aaron worked his ass of to get.

The trip was a little rough since we were still jet lagged and I was a bitch thanks to poor eating habits, but it was great to spend a relaxing long weekend with everyone.  Here are some of the highlights.

The Group

I guess Michelle must have taken this picture.  (I was at the house making my children nap.)  From the very back on the left side:  Megan and Barret, Chris, Aaron, Wade and Ruby.  From the back on the right side:  John, Jessica, and Baby Boy TBD, Marnie, Lora and Declan’s back, Wade, Ang and Olivia.

The Activities

Happy Birthday Liam and Ruby

200806-slutmonkey-contente-188.jpg

Yes, that’s a kabab skewer.

200806-slutmonkey-contente-200.jpg

Liam doesn’t know how to pucker to blow.  He curls his lips around his teeth instead, which does nothing for the projection of air in a directed manner.  I blew out the candle.

200806-slutmonkey-contente-352.jpg

Enjoyed eating the “birthday,” as Liam calls the cake.

200806-slutmonkey-contente-204.jpg

Rubes was one worn out puppy.  She ate cake the day after. (Don’t worry…she wasn’t alone.  Michelle, Lora, and I think Megan, helped her out.)

That’s “Mushul” in the drawing. (I think that’s how he spelled it.  It was something like that, anyway.)

200806-slutmonkey-contente-348.jpg

Lots of eating

and hanging out on the deck.

And sometimes eating things that should never be eaten, such as an oreo/cheese/salsa sandwich.

Not impressed.

Girl Stuff

(”OMG, your pashmina is to die for. Are you going to wear it to the formal ping pong party this evening?  *giggling* Oh, how posh!”)

Wearing the same clothes day after day because Mom is an idiot and didn’t pack warm enough clothes.

200806-slutmonkey-contente-550.jpg

We left before most of the others because we had to get back to Dorothy Land.  Yes, that’s our sweet, sweet minivan.

200806-slutmonkey-contente-548.jpg

The drive was nice and relaxing.  It’s been sunny every time I’ve ever seen the Golden Gate Bridge, so this was a first.

200806-slutmonkey-contente-31.jpg

200806-slutmonkey-contente-33.jpg

We made a stop in Marin County to see the Frank Lloyd Wright government building.

200806-slutmonkey-contente-30.jpg

It was fascinating.

And then we almost missed our flight home.

This is starting to sound like a habit, no?

We did learn our lesson though, Elena is a force not to be reckoned with when it comes down to sharing a seat.  The child will not be a lap baby on my lap ever again.
