Grandma’s Visit: Day 1

Filed under: Aaron, BackBlogging, Elena, Family, Liam, Life In London, Mommyhood — Heidi at 9:29 pm on Wednesday, April 30, 2008

Aaron stuck around today so that he could pick up his mom from the airport. She got here around 1.30 and when she arrived, Liam was on the toilet trying to take the worst poo of his life.

He tried for about 20 minutes and cried because it was too hard and was going to “break my bones.”

I felt terrible for him, but he gave up and sat on my lap for awhile before he’d even say hello to grandma.

He finally came around and managed to be civil, but we didn’t see any movement, so to speak. The poor kid is miserable and went to bed miserable.

I finally called my resident poop expert, Jenny. She gave me all the goods and I immediately tromped up the stairs to make Liam suck down an entire glass of watered down apple juice. He was thrilled.

I was fully prepared for him to wake up during the night, but he sucked it up and slept through it.

Elena was quite pleased to see Grandma. I was too. I actually got a few things done while she messed around with the kiddos. Here’s to the rest of her stay….

Housecleaning

Was kind of a boring day. I did a lot of things that needed to be done while Daniela kept E and her sister, Tina, cleaned.

And it rained.  It poured as I took L to school, and when I picked him up.  I’m starting to wonder if summer will ever come.

L stayed up and watched “British” Backyardigans when E went down for a nap and I stared at my laptop a little longer.  He had to sit on the sofa with me because the pups took over the recliner.

Elena threw a fit about sleeping in her bed when the time came. I knew she was out of her bed, but there’s a box on the floor so she can get back in - and she usually does.  I finally went in at about 9 to check on her and she was on the floor by her radiator sleeping on Stinky Pinky with her little butt sticking up in the air.  I tried to move her, but she busted me and yelled and yelled for “noosies,” so I finally gave in and she went right to sleep afterward.  She’s such a little manipulator sometimes!

Fortunately it was a better day.  My toe still hurts, but I can deal.  Jeanne gets in tomorrow, so I’ll get a break from the kids which will be really nice.  Maybe I’ll even get to run some errands solo!

Gorgeous on the outside, angry on the inside.

Here’s how my day went.

  • 06.00 - Alarm went off and I reset it.
  • 06.30 - Alarm went off and I asked A to get up with kids.  He didn’t…even though I got up with them both days this weekend.
  • 06.40 - Fell down the stairs holding Elena and hurt my big toe.
  • 07.00 - Made breakfast and spilled half of my protein shake on my computer.  It took me a good 20 minutes to get everything cleaned up.
  • 07.45 - Showered with both kids.  We were supposed to go to a birthday party, but I just wasn’t feeling quite right and I was exhausted, so we didn’t go.  Had to listen to Liam asking me why we weren’t going to Abby’s for the rest of the day.
  • 09.45 - Had a snack since I missed part of my breakfast.
  • 10.00 - Children making me crazy.
  • 11.30 - Tired. Exhausted, actually.  Considered putting the kids in bed at noon.  Instead I put in Cars and tried to keep E from fussing and getting in my way as I sat on the sofa.
  • 01.30 -Put kids in bed. And I tried to take A nap. L didn’t sleep and he was talking loudly and hammering on the floor.   It was really annoying - particularly when he woke E.  She was up at 02.30.
  • 03.00 - Cleaned up the house and called Heather to bitch.  It was VERY cathartic.  I really miss talking on the phone with her every day…without the kids listening.
  • 04.00 - A could tell that I wasn’t having a good day and he decided to come home early and took the kids outside to play.  Thank goodness.
  • 05.00 - Began the process of making a shake for my dinner.  I got some new protein powder today, but I have to finish off some of the pre-made mixes I put together.  Was hoping to replicate this mornings, but I had to cook the oatmeal.  It as the thickest drink I’ve ever drunk.  Not nearly as good.  But at least I got to drink it alone.  I was actually pretty calm by the time Aaron got home.  Heather took the brunt of my bitching.
  • 07.00 - Got L in bed.  He was a wreck.  E was kind of a wreck, but we got her in bed as well.  Then I picked up the house.  Whoopee.

I’m so glad it’s over.

Sunday in Surrey

We’ve had plans for ages to go to visit Jo and her husband, Fred - the couple from Wichita that we met through Clint’s (of Clint and Molly goodness) mom.

They live in a little town in Surrey and we headed out this morning after we got the kids ready to go.

Of course, it rained. It didn’t matter anyway…the kids had a fantastic time playing in the puddles. Liam managed to get into one that was almost as deep as his boots are tall.

It did finally stop raining and we took a leisurely walk to feed the ducks and swans. The kids got a little hungry on the way and greatly enjoyed the cheap white bread that Jo brought for the ducks. You would have thought it was candy the way they were snarfing it down. Too bad they couldn’t eat the healthy bird seed mix that she brought for the birds - turns out they’re fans of the white bread too!

We went with a family from Santiago, Chile as well. They have six children ages 17 to 5! (You can imagine I about passed out thinking about it.) As we were leaving, Aaron heard Paulina talking to herself, “Uno, dos, tres, quatro, cinco…. Hmmm, I’m missing one! Oh there he is. Seis.”

The older ones definitely help with the younger ones. They really enjoyed Liam and Elena.

Our kids had a blast as well. Both of them learned to kick a soccer ball - although Liam likes to pick it up and place it where he’d like it before kicking it.

Aaron and I actually got a little break from the kids since everyone else was playing with them.

Eventually though, Elena saw the big German Shepard and we had to go and throw a stick for him. She gave him kisses and petted him very gently, as one should do with a big dog. The girl has no fear.

Liam and I also spent some time messing around in the trees. It reminded me of going to my cousins’ house out in the “country” when I was a kid. We used to play in the trees for hours building forts, looking for Monarch caterpillars in the milkweed, and running away from ticks. (Oh…that was just me.) Anyway, Liam and I collected rocks and he filled his entire bucket. He was quite proud.

At one point I got very excited about a very large one and asked him what he thought about it.  He also got very excited and said, “WOW, that’s ridiculous!”

I think Jo sat through at least three tellings of Liam describing the rocks.

(”But Jo, LOOK! This one is GRAY!”)

After the park we went to have tea and cake at a little shop run by women who go to this church.

It was a beautiful view, even with the cloudy sky.

I like to read head stones in cemetaries, but much of the writing on these was worn away, thanks to the lichen.

This is Paulina and Alejandro’s oldest. Isn’t she beautiful? (Oh to be 17 without larger-than-life hair.)

All of their children are adorable…and very well behaved as well.

(Though not all fond of the camera.)

Tea was tasty and Elena managed to share a huge piece of chocolate cake with Fred. She was on his lap and she kept looking up at him to say, “mo chock-wat cake, peas.” I bet she ate 1/4 of it. She’s a girl after my own heart.

Jo had May baskets for everyone to take home. Aaron and I ate most of the candy. Sorry kids.

So here’s everyone but Elena. Names escape me at the moment, but I will get them from the fam and include them later.

It was a great day and I hope we get to see everyone again…even if it has to be in Wichita!

Playing in the Rain

Filed under: BackBlogging, Blah Blah Blah, Elena, Friends, Liam, Life In London, Mommyhood — Heidi at 10:24 pm on Thursday, April 24, 2008

Got my butt out of bed at a decent time this morning and got ready so that we could meet Jenn and Jack at the park to play. The sun was shining when I woke up, but by the time I headed out to take L to school, it was getting cloudy.

E and I went to the sand pit anyway.

She and Jack played for about 45 minutes when the clouds opened up and it started to rain. We tossed the kids into the strollers and headed home. Eventually Jack was getting wet, so we put him under the rain cover in our stroller with Elena and hauled ass to get home. Poor Jenn didn’t have a hood, so she was SOAKED by the time we made it to her house.

And really, while the rain sucked, it did feel good to get out and walk.

Elena played pretty quietly and I got a few things done around here as I watched the rain come and go. It was on hiatus when I decided it was time to go get Liam. I had Elena all ready to get into the stroller and I hemmed and hawed trying to decide whether or not to risk it and walk as the black clouds stared down at me.

I finally decided to drive and was SO glad I did. It started raining as soon as we pulled out of the parking spot and it was pouring by the time we got to school. We picked up Liam and all bolted out to the car as quickly as we could to avoid getting soaked. I was standing at the door trying to unlock it when the hail started coming down. (It hails here more than anyplace I’ve ever been.)

Finally got everyone into the car and we got going. Liam turned to me as he was picking hail off of his clothes and said, “I got ICED, Mama!!!” He makes me laugh all of the time now with his crazy comments.

Thank GOD both kids were quiet during nap time…even if L didn’t sleep. I am still SO tired. I got a good 1.5 hours in. THEN, I made the kids play and watch a video while I conferred with Heather about the clothing I wanted to purchase from Old Navy. Between Stuff-n-Save and my Banana gift card, I paid almost half of the original price. GO ME!!! Now I just have to wait until my mom comes to get it here. I haven’t been able to bring myself to go to the mall and check out H&M. Online shopping is SO much easier.

Headed over to Jenn and Noah’s around 7.30 to keep the kids so that they could go out for dinner. I’m so glad we have this scheduled once a month. It’s wonderful to get out knowing we won’t be paying a sitter $16/hour. This town really is insanely expensive.
