Life (In London), Medicated

Worst Halloween Ever

It started out really well.

A came home early to take L out in the neighborhood. It seemed odd that he didn’t see anyone out in costume as he walked home from the Tube station because it’s dark early here thanks to the end of DST last weekend. However, it was also 5 o’clock. Not prime trick or treating time.

I had dinner ready when he got home and L was fighting me to eat - which he needed to do before he ate a bunch of candy - so we decided we’d sit down together to eat and then check out the situation. In the meantime, we turned on all of our lights and made sure the curtains were open so that people could see we were all about the trickin’ and treatin’.

It was quiet for quite a while - as far as the visitors go - but L filled A in on his busy day (with me prodding him about every damn animal he saw) and as he was talking someone knocked at the door.

Aaron’s face lit up. He was all over it.

He rushed out to answer it and I saw him check to make sure the candy was by the door on his way. He opened the door a crack…but it never opened any farther.

It was a dude going door-to-door to sell his paintings. On HALLOWEEN. WTF?

A was disappointed - more like irritated - when he came back to the table. We finished eating and he went out to take a look.

NO ONE. Not one measly princess.

Shit. Shit. Shit.

We formulated Plan B almost immediately:

I (the Halloween Goblin) would hide candy and L would trick or treat Easter bunny stylee around the house.

As L began to look for his candy, there was another knock at the door. I didn’t hear it, but A was positive.

I went to answer and there wasn’t anyone there. He swore that he heard the knock, so I stepped out on to the sidewalkfootpath and nearly ran head-on into a young woman who was evidently looking for Ben.

Again, not the expectation. And again, disappointment.

BUT, L didn’t know the difference. We told him about the Halloween Goblin and just said they do it different in England.

And we had a great time.

Every single time he found something, he said, “Oh, look!  I found some CANDY!”

He enjoyed eating it.  You can see he has quite a spread (of the same kind of candy).  I always loved to get home and dump out my bag on the floor to pick out the bad stuff.  There’s nothing bad here.

The aftermath.

From 2007 Life In …

And E?  She went as Emalee.

But doesn’t she always….
She had a lot of fun watching L.  She’s started chattering nonsense the last week or so and she provided color commentary for the event.

Anyway, we’re going to do some research and by next year we’ll have a better idea of where to go to ring the doorbells (or rattle the mailboxes).

In the meantime,  we’re going to practice saying “trick or treat”  and “thank you” each time we have candy.  Saying it one time once a year just isn’t enough to keep him up to speed with the other three year olds.  And we can’t have him relying on Gabe to work for the candy every year.

Look RIGHT when you’re entering the traffic circle.

Liam had an awesome experience today. He got to see tropical animals at school. It was through a group called Tropical Inc. They rescue animals and then take them out to educate the public. L was absolutely thrilled. He held a hedge hog, two lizards, touched three snakes, petted a skunk and an owl, along with all of the stuff I missed because I had to take E home. :(

He was hilarious. Every time he was done with one of the animals, he would ask for “another one, please.” Maybe he’s found his calling.

And E had a great time too. She “ssssss”ed at the snake and when the woman brought out the owl, she started yelling: “Ah-oooooooo! AHH-OOOOOOOO!!!

It was funny at first. And then it wasn’t funny any more. And then she was just yelling. She obviously needed a nap, so I brought her home.

Certainly it sucked that we had to leave before they brought out the tarantula, but also, I met another American mom whose daughter is in L’s class. The three Americans chatted a bit, but their kids got a little crazy too and we ended up going our separate ways.

I do find it very funny that L’s class is 25% American. Who knew?

Anyway, E was exhausted and she fell asleep in the stroller. When we got home I pulled the stroller in and left her in it. She slept for almost an hour, which gave me plenty of time to put together a grocery list.

And when she woke up?

I DROVE to the store.

Yes, me. Driving on the left side of the road in the right side of the car.

It went pretty well actually. I only got in the passenger door once out of habit. I shifted (my automatic) with my left hand. It really was a nonevent because Susie Satellite told me what to do (and recalculated every time I turned off because she was trying to make me go through a traffic circle), and the other people on the road just happened to be watching where I was driving.

Unfortunately, though I tried with all of my might, I am no longer a traffic circle virgin. I just couldn’t avoid the one that got me out of the “superstore” parking lot.

It was a disaster.

I am not good with the traffic circle in the US. I felt like I did when I first got here and kept looking left for cars before I crossed the street. There is definitely a lot of traffic circle practicing in my future.

But, I did drive to Tesco and we lived to tell about it.

I strutted around the store picking out my groceries and enjoyed every minute of it. I’m sure that people knew I rocked the road to Tesco as I went up and down the aisles.

I was having such a great time and I cut it to the last possible minute to leave in time to pick up L. We got home in about five minutes after we made it through the scary traffic circle and headed back to pick him up.

Even with cutting it close, I was going to be early, so I decided that I’d go ahead and try to walk to the end of the long row of stores to get my camera. As soon as I started, I knew I’d be late picking him up. I almost turned around, but by then the race was on.

I made it to the store at 5 til 1, got my camera, rushed out, and RAN most of the way back to the school pushing the Joovie.

E was in heaven.

Not only did she have my sharpie and thought that was extremely cool, but we were also flying by people who were staring at us as though we were crazy.

Well, we were. BUT I HAVE MY CAMERA BACK!!!

(A little tip for those of you with cameras with auto focus lenses: move the toggle to Manual Focus before you put it in your camera bag or carry it around. That way the gear won’t get thrashed if the lens accidentally gets moved around.)

We got back to the school at 7 after and I wasn’t the last one to pick up my kid! I couldn’t believe it. I fully expected them to be standing outside tapping their feet waiting for me. But he didn’t even have his coat on.

He is always in such a good mood after school…and I’m excited to see him, so I suppose that helps a bit. He gladly helped me put the mail in the big Royal Mail cylinder and then came home and ate his second lunch.

Now I’m trying to figure out whether or not we’re going to have any trick or treaters. The trip to Tesco this morning was solely to get candy. I hope we get rid of all of it.

And L is looking VERY forward to going out this evening. He’s been practicing his polite “trick or treat…thank you” all day long.

Update on Halloween later.

Two Among Thousands

I overheard a woman at school talking to one of the teachers this morning in regard to Halloween. I just found out yesterday and I guess some people just found out today that the kids are dressing up tomorrow.

One of the women overheard the conversation but didn’t quite catch it because she asked, “Are they going to wear their costumes tomorrow?

Normally it’s not something I’d pay much attention to. However, in this case it caught my attention because what she didn’t say was “Ah they goiinng to weah theh coshtchooms tomahrow?”

My heart skipped a beat. I listened closely to see if she would speak again.

Then I heard it again - that undeniably American accent.

She’d barely finished talking when I blurted out, “Are you American?” There were several people between us and they all looked a little startled, but she confirmed.

I don’t think I hid my excitement very well. The twirling around and singing The Halls Are Alive With the Sound of America might have been a little much. It was just such a shock to meet an American - at L’s school, of all places. I’ve been here five weeks and I’ve not heard the accent from someone I don’t know the entire time.

She must have understood on a deeper level because she was sweet and we chatted a bit on the walk home. Her daughter is L’s age and her son is 17 months.

She mentioned that she knows several other Americans who live inthe area. I about fell over. I was beginning to think that the Yanks weren’t into Golders Green.

And you know…while I’m looking forward to getting to know some British women, it would certainly be nice to have someone to talk to about how much I hate George Bush. (Obviously if she likes him, we can’t be friends.)

Anyway, I scribbled my phone number down on a piece of L’s coloring paper with a marker. I haven’t wanted someone to call me this badly since I had to call and ask A to go out with me.

I wonder how long I’ll be able to stand it.

Oh well, I’ll see her tomorrow. L has a class activity and the fam is invited. Hopefully we’ll have a little time to chat.

And now, I must go clean for A’s mom. The countdown to Friday at 5 a.m. is on.

Second First Day of School

L went to school this morning and had a fantastic time. I didn’t have my camera, so I couldn’t take a picture. But I assure you, he was SO big walking into his classroom.

He tells us that he made friends with a girl named Liam whose hair is just a little darker than his. Last time we were there he warmed right up to the Asian kid. Hmmm…wonder why. There aren’t very many in his class, so I hope that he has an easy time making friends. He’s such a sweet kid.

So, he had a wonderful morning and mine was extremely productive. E and I even took a walk. I paid bills…went through mail…found all of the instructions for appliances, thermostat, air conditioner, etc., for the renters. I did laundry. I did dishes. I made a grocery list. These are things that are difficult to do when there are two of them running around.

It’s unfortunate that you don’t realize this until there are two.

But, having had a pretty quiet morning, I was excited to see him when we walked to get him.

Oh, don’t worry…in the hour we were home he made certain that I was ready for him to take a nap.

The rest of the day went pretty well. I worked on getting new pictures put in frames so that we have some of Elena to put up, and this evening A and I watched Knocked Up after the kids went to bed. Hilarious.

I wonder how long it will take for relaxing to feel normal.

Dum De Dum

Today

I

  • got up with the kids so A could sleep. Well, I sort of got up. I took them in L’s room, put on a video, and crawled in his bed.
  • lamented the sunshine.
  • did an art project with L. Aaron was completely freaked out that L was using his hands.
  • did laundry.
  • ate an insane amount of candy.  Evidently I need to get into some other routine.
  • cleaned toilets. They don’t even look like their the same potties.
  • did a little organizational work around the house.
  • fixed dinner.

AJ

  • did some probable picture placement.
  • brewed beer.
  • greatly enjoyed dinner.
  • figured out by watching TV at 9 p.m. That it was actually only 8 because daylight savings time ended today. Yeah, that would have made me look like a mom who has it together tomorrow morning when L and I showed up for school at 8 thinking it was 9.

L

  • LOVED his art project.
It’s a place mat…to keep all of the crap he drips off of the table. Now we need to make one for the floor.

E

  • ran around with dirty laundry in her mouth. She’s particularly fond of socks.
