Today’s Research Results

Filed under: Elena, Liam, Mommyhood, Travel — Heidi at 9:20 pm on Wednesday, May 30, 2007

I spent some time this morning doing a bit of research to figure out what we need to do to get the dogs and the kids into the UK.

  1. I knew it was going to be tough, but I didn’t realize that it takes SEVEN months to get a dog - even one with glowing health reports and ALWAYS current rabies vaccinations - into the UK. The process is so complicated that it took me probably four hours to figure out exactly what had to be done, how to get it done in the proper order, and the timetable in which (if everything goes well) it could realistically be accomplished. You’d think M & M were suspected terrorists.
  2. The US government requires that a minor applicant and BOTH parents appear at an approved location before a passport will be granted. If both parents can not appear, they require ANOTHER form completed and notarized for the parent that can’t be in attendance.  You’d think we were trying to get a dog into Britain.

And they’re such little dogs and children too. It’s not like you could hide a large bomb in any of them.

The fact of the matter is, Liam is the terrorist. That kid destroys our house on a daily basis.

Aaron- If that’s how it works, we could start our own terrorist cell…I have 2 more members at my house. What would it be called?

Heidi-

I would recommend paying the extra money to get the kids passports expedited. We applied for Mav’s passport 10 weeks before we needed it and ended up paying the extra money at the end to get it expedited because it didn’t make it here in time. I think it’s taking almost 3 months in some cases right now. Just FYI. Sorry, I’m no help on the dogs!

Hey, Dad’s an attorney. He can get things notarized real easy like. I just went through the passport thing. They don’t want you to steal the kids without Dad’s permission.

Yeah, like I’d leave the country and take my kids. No way. Too much work.

I agree, get them expedited. Things are really slow with everyone needing them for Canada and Mexico now.
If you get bogged down with the paperwork, just come over and look at our stack for adopting internationally. You’ll leave with a smile : )

I have tons of info on schools when you are ready to start on that research. Let me know and I will hook you up.

Congratulations, Heidi! Its going to be a grand adventure. I agree with everyone about the expedited thing. My husband had to have a passport for his job, and it came back super-fast when he sent it in to be expedited.

Also, I don’t know if this will be an issue or not, but I spent a summer overseas and had to get a visa to stay in the country I was going to. I had a terrible time getting my visa back, until I called my congressman. I worked with someone in my office, and had it in my hand just a few days later. If you run into trouble, call one of your elected officials in Washington. They are there to serve you.

Good luck!
