Life (In London), Medicated

A day of nice surprises.

Filed under: Aaron, Blah Blah Blah, Family, Friends, Liam — Heidi at 9:11 pm on Friday, July 28, 2006

It’s been a day full of trying to get stuff back in its place. Fili was here Wed., and the house is already trashed. I’m in project completion mode. This means I have a lot of projects going on at once so I don’t get bored, and now I have to finish all of them.

Aaron ADORES this about me.

Anyway, as I was paying bills today, I noticed that I didn’t have a statement from my mortgage company. Turns out, I already paid the statement for 8/1 back in June. We don’t owe anything until 9/1. Holy crap, we’ll have a baby by then!

Then, my sister called on her way to Old Navy to do some serious sale shopping. She offered to be my personal shopper and picked up some CHEAP items for L and E. I love a good bargain; I just hate to shop.

I also managed to get the hair to an acceptable state. I actually like it. L still says it’s yellow, but I think it’s platinum. Props to the tech support at Sally Beauty.

L and I had a pretty good day as well.  We went on a walk this morning and while it was tiring, we had a fantastic, slow, I’m-so-out-of-shape stroll around the neighborhood.  There was a bit of drama involving sidewalk chalk when we got home, but he recovered pretty quickly.  Additionally, he’s been jumping on the sofa and the chaise, and I’m sick and tired of dealing with it, so I decided I’d block off the entire room, including his toys, if he jumped.  It’s made life interesting…because of course, he jumped first thing this morning…but I believe my sanity level is much higher since I don’t have to talk to him about it every three seconds. As a result, he’s been spending more time in his play kitchen pretending to cook, and he’s taken quite an interest in his puzzles.  I also made him a cool fort out of our dining room table and blankets.  I remember how much I enjoyed that as a kid.  I’d haul all my crap in there and play for hours.  So, I covered the table and moved some toys in there for him.  He thinks it’s the coolest thing ever.  Now, if he could just remember that he can’t stand up under there.  Every once in a while I hear a bonk and a whimper…but he doesn’t cry.  I guess he knows it’s his own fault.

Finally, AJ came home early - and by early I mean left “on time” - and helped with L.  I managed to get through a few more projects in the meantime.  It feels good to check things off the list.

I have two baby showers to attend tomorrow.  AJ is keeping L in the morning/early afternoon and we are all going to the one in the evening.  It’ll be a busy day, but I’m glad I can be out and about.  It will be nice to have some different scenery for a change.

I am a project machine.

I wasn’t as tired today, so I got a lot done in terms of administrative crap: phone calls, making appointments, running errands, etc.

I guess I should say I got a good start on all of the aforementioned items. It was nice to get some semblance of organization going on around here…except now there’s crap all over the place because I start a whole bunch of projects at once.  Oh well, they get finished eventually.

But I do hate when I have to wait on people to return phone calls.
As far as our day went, it was actually pretty good.

L woke up in a better mood, thank the gods.  I wasn’t prepared for another screaming morning.
We managed to get to our last KM class and L and Gabe were EXTREMELY excited to see one another. You’d think Jen or I had a restraining order on them and it was temporarily lifted JUST for today. They didn’t really want to participate…they just played with each other and wanted to be with either Jen OR me.

We made a quick stop at the DIY hair experts at Sally Beauty.  I told the woman I needed help, she took one look at me, and directed me to the take-the-yellow/orange-out-of-hair-from-bad-color-jobs aisle.  They are PRE-PARED for peeps like me.  She even sold me gloves and deep conditioner.  I can’t wait to see how it turns out. And, by they way, I’m still ahead on what it would have cost me to have someone professional do it. So there.
L took a good nap and I continued work on my projects.  Since we both deserved a reward, we went to McDonald’s and got an ice cream cone to share.  It was raining, so I drove through and then parked and crawled over the seats to the back.  I’m sure it was quite a sight.  But, he loved it…and so did I.  I think I need an ice cream cone every day.

Finally, we went to dinner at AJ’s parents’ house and L and Gabe got to run around like wild men.  I had been thinking about brownies, so I whipped up a batch and baked them over there for dessert.

It got late and L didn’t get to bed until almost 9 by the time we got home and got him settled down.  AJ just came upstairs and laughed because I’m almost falling asleep at the computer.

So, that’s enough for today.

Why today was sucky.

Sorry it’s been a lot of bullets lately and not a lot of thought provoking posts.  My brain is on vacation.

  • L woke up in a crappy mood and cried in the bathroom with AJ while I was trying to rest.  He was yelling, “want go see Mama,” at the top of his lungs in his new “angry” voice.  I guess it’s nice to know I’m loved.
  • Had to go and preregister at the hospital at 9 and had to get L to Grandma’s by 8.15.  Twas a bit of a struggle.
  • Preregistration didn’t take long once I got in, but I had to sit in one of two waiting areas until I did:  the first was a family waiting for a baby to arrive; the second was a family waiting to see the new arrival.  All I’m saying is, Grandmas can be vicious.
  • Since L was at Grandma’s, I was going to spend the morning running errands.  So, I headed toward the mall to buy the ever glamorous nursing bras.  On the way, I rear-ended a woman driving a Cadillac Escalade.  It had rained a little bit and it was humid, so the roads were damp in places.  I either had wet tires, or the road was wet, because where I normally would have had plenty of time to break for a quick slowdown due to traffic stopping at a light, I hit the brakes and skidded right into her car.  We pulled off into a parking lot and she called her boss, whose car she was driving, and I called the cops.  Fortunately, no one was hurt and the Escalade didn’t look to have too much damage thanks to the hitch.  The poor girl freaked out when she saw how pregnant I was, but really, I was fine - aside from being annoyed.  The Jeep, on the other hand, will need a new bumper.  It took almost 45 minutes for the cop to arrive - even though we were across the street from the courthouse - so that took up much of my morning.  And, I got a citation for some weird violation…Inability to maintain control of the vehicle…or something like that and a warning because we moved three years ago and I never updated my address on my driver’s license.  (I took care of that online the moment I had time.)
  • Made it to the mall.  Bra purchase accomplished.
  • Drove through McDonald’s for ice cream and ate it on the way to pick up L so that I didn’t have to share with him.
  • Fili was here when we got home and L and I both took naps.
  • Hit the grocery store after nap time to get bananas…and some other stuff.  It was exhausting…probably because I made L go two places after the first didn’t have a rotisserie chicken, which I was not going to be able to live without for some reason.
  • Spent some time worrying about not having a prioritized list of things that need to be done while AJ took L on a bike ride.  I’m just feeling overwhelmed again.
  • Crawled in bed after L went to sleep and talked with AJ for about 45 minutes.  I think that’s the most attention we’ve paid to just one another for weeks.  It was nice.
  • Washed the face and brushed the teeth and realized why I have been so tired the last two days.  I have a MONSTER cold sore on the brink.  Could be worse though…at least now I have something to draw attention from the yellow hair.

  • Room: Fabrics here. Bedding here.
  • Number of trips to the hospital: one.

About Elena: (Word-for-word courtesy of Fertility Friend Pregnancy.)

  • Your baby is now considered full term.
  • Your baby weighs about 6 lbs (2750g) and measures about 20.7 inches (46cm) in length. Crown to rump measurement is about 13.5 inches (34cm).
  • Your baby now feels lower in your pelvis.
  • Your baby continues to grow, kick, and move about.
  • Your baby’s face has filled out and the cheeks now look plump and full. Fat baby cheeks are caused by fat deposits, but also by powerful sucking muscles which your baby has been honing by sucking her thumb.
  • Your baby’s skull is firm, but it is not hard as it needs to give a little when it is passing through the birth canal.
  • Your baby’s head is probably down by now, but about three percent of babies present in a breech (bottom down) position. Your doctor may try to turn your baby around if it is in a breech position by putting pressure on your abdomen. This is called external cephalic version (ECV) and is effective in about 50% of cases. If your baby is in a breech position, ask your doctor about what your options are for the birth. You may or may not require a cesarean delivery.
  • You will probably now see your doctor or midwife once a week.
  • Now that the baby has settled lower in your abdomen, you may find breathing to be easier again. However, because your baby is now putting even more pressure on your bladder, you will have to urinate more frequently. (Peeing is such a nuisance.)
  • You may have gained up to 30 pounds or more by this point. (Still hangin’ out at 24.)
  • You are probably starting to get tired of being pregnant and you are probably focused on the birth ahead of you. (Well, I’m definitely tired of all of the crap I’ve had to deal with during this pregnancy, but at the moment, I’m high on freedom.)
  • It may feel like you have been pregnant forever and you just want the baby out. (Actually, not yet. With L, I was beyond ready by this point.)

Pregnancy Symptoms: (Some taken from a list courtesy of What To Expect When You’re Expecting.)

  • Ok…I’m sick of these. They aren’t changing. From now on, I’m only listing NEW ones. If you’re interested in previous ones, go here.
  • Have had a few cravings: Rotisserie chicken, McDonald’s ice cream cone, Sonic diet cherry limeades - easy ice.

Most Interesting Emotional Breakdown(s) This Week:

Playdates + Picking Up = No Bananas Today

Filed under: Aaron, Food, Friends, Liam, Mommyhood, Pregnancy — Heidi at 9:42 pm on Tuesday, July 25, 2006

L was a needy little man again today. I’m fairly certain that he’s grown accustomed to having someone at his beck and call over the last month, and well, I’m just not that person. The kid can pick up his own milk for pete’s sake.

Fortunately we had a playdate planned with Reece and Miss Laura from KM. It’s always a better day when you get to play with someone else’s toys, right?

I was a tired Mama and it worked out well for me too. We got there a little after 10, stayed for a little over an hour and L played with cars and got to go outside and play on Reece’s new playground.

(Of course, I forgot my camera - I’m out of practice of leaving the house - so this picture will have to suffice. I’d photoshop their heads in on some of those other kids, but I’m too tired.)

L had a blast and a sweaty head by the time we left. We totally need the play set. (After we kill the weeds, landscape the back, and hopefully plant some grass. Hmmmm…not likely it will be this year.)

I had a strange craving for Panera, so I grabbed lunch on our way home and then L and I chilled out a bit before his nap. I took a short snooze and then commenced preparing for Fili tomorrow. I got the craft room picked up and rearranged the sofa-ridden area back to what it was prior to me making a permanent dent in the cushion. I printed pictures. I organized picture frames. I even sorted through some of the toys to be hidden away so that we can get them out again when the shine is back. And, I did laundry.

However, I did not get the dishwasher unloaded and I didn’t get to the grocery store…the two things I hate to do. I could see the dismay on AJ’s face as soon as he walked in the door. He immediately noticed that there were no bananas on the hanger. Shortly thereafter, he pulled out the bag of bran flakes with a few left in one corner (enough for a small child) and waved the bag at me to let me know that we are out of bran flakes. Creativity finally forced him to oatmeal with raisins, milk, and Splenda. He was pleased with himself.

Oh well, there’s tomorrow. I have an appt. to preregister at the hospital so that my paperwork doesn’t have areas where I’ve pushed the pen through the paper in pain during a contraction, and L will be at Grandma’s for the morning. I’ll either run errands then or come home and finish cleaning for the cleaner and run errands later. It all depends on how the Monster chooses to direct my day via the yelling.

But one way or another, you can be sure, AJ WILL get his bananas.
