Merry Thankschristmasgiving and Happy Birthday, Mama.
We celebrated Thanksgiving and Christmas at my Gram’s house today.
We managed to get dressed and to the event on time. I even colored my hair and frosted a few sugar cookies this morning to take with us. (I do love the baking and cookie decorating aspects of the holidays…even if I’m not big on the holidays themselves.)
Don’t we look wonderfully gussied up?
As usual, we had turkey, zwieback, dressing, mashed taters (as my Dad says), gravy, cranberry sauce, creamed corn, and two different kinds of pies in addition to the myriad other desserts. We also had my Gram’s famous Ham and Beans. They are Gooo-Ooood. The woman uses lard in them…how can they not be good? Here she is in the epitome of her role at Thanksgiving. The Ham and Beans are on the left. She’s actually stirring the gravy. When I think about the holidays at her house, I always picture her messing at the stove.
She had a difficult time today dealing with Ern not being there. She was so sad. It would be terribly hard to go to family gatherings without Aaron.
AJ and I brought Liam home shortly after opening Christmas gifts and he took a nap. I decorated a cake for Mom while he slept. Her birthday is Monday and we decided to celebrate this evening. Heath baked the cakes and made frosting yesterday while she was at her in-laws’ so that we could surprise Mom.
I didn’t have time to put a lot of thought into the cake, but this was my initial stroke of brilliance. Incidentally, crayons work amazingly well when trying to determine color schemes.
I thought it turned out rather nicely.
And, we managed to surprise her - so much so that she had eaten a piece and a half of pie before we managed to get everyone home to get out the cake!
Well, what were we going to tell her? She REALLY wanted the pie.
